미국 건국 이념과 대한민국의 건국 이념

CSIS에서 인턴할 때 썼던 글 중 일부. 그리고 그곳에서 '미국 건국의 아버지 그리고 대한민국 건국의 아버지'에 대한 주제로 발표도 했었다. 2013년 미국이 당면했던 과제들(기존 헤게모니의 변화, 셧다운, 티파티 등등)에 대처하는 미국 엘리트들을 바라보며 과거의 미국과 현재의 미국을 이어주고 있는 끈 혹은 정신을 찾아보고자 했었다. 나는 그것이 바로 미국 건국 아버지들의 건국 정신과 신념이라고 생각했었다. 그리고 건국 아버지들이 만들어낸 미국, 미국인으로서의 Common Groud가 지금의 미국을 지탱하고 이어나가는 원동력이라고 보았다.

그리고 이를 바탕으로 대한민국을 돌아 봤었다. 과연 대한민국의 근간을 이루고 있는 정신은 무엇인지, 대한민국의 출발점을 어디로 두어야 하는지 등등의 논쟁은 좌우의 이념 논쟁 속에서 국민적 동의를 이루어내지 못하고 있다. 우리는 이제 낡은 기존의 좌우논쟁에서 벗어나 대한민국의 독립과 건국 과정을 좀 더 객관적으로 지켜볼 필요가 있다. 이 과정에서 공과 사를 명확히 해야함은 당연하다. 또한 독립과 통일 과정에서 우리가 어느 정도의 주도성을 가지고 이루어졌는지 대한민국의 정체성이란 무엇인지에 대해서도 국가 구성원으로서 깊이 생각해볼 필요가 있다고 생각한다.

When I came to America for the first time in my life, I wanted to understand the fundamental values of being American.  I believe I found the answer in the Founding Fathers’ Principles and Philosophies – as stated in the Declaration of Independence – that all men were created equal and their creator (who they called God) had given all men certain rights (by what is called Natural Law), which could not justly be taken away. The Founders of the United States wanted to establish a country that would endure for generations, and they understood that massive debt would endanger this goal.  Their principles and philosophies still remain in the United States Constitution and therefore, daily life.

When I attended the 50^th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Speech, toured Congress, witnessed the Government Shutdown, read the Washington Post and New York Times, attended seminars at think tanks and held general conversations with Americans, I felt that I always could find traces of the Founding father’s legacy.  I think that this legacy establishes common ground for America to sustain its society.

Comparing this with the Republic of Korea, I often wonder what Korea’s national philosophy and values are.  Seeing that a nation is also a big community in a sense, I try to look for the shared and maintained values in Korea.  Do we also have a common ground that is shared by both left and right?
